Dear Howard,

Monday evening, we are listening to “Blondie”. We have been over to Headmire Cemetery. We met Bergile and two of her girl friends at Mrs. Fowler’s station. Showed her the pictures, Mrs. Fowler and I got quite a kick out of that one of the two of you, she said, “I like this one” and I said yes I thought that was nice too. Youthful looking isn’t it? and she said “Makes me feel romantic”. By that time Bergile was blushing. None of her alone was fine, in fact, they were all very good. She just kept the romantic pose and gave me the others. I made a dollar and a quarter today. When I was over to Jack’s. Ruby had two new dresses that needed altering and she asked me if I would fix them for her. I did. And when she came after them tonight, she insisted on giving me that much, I would have done it for nothing and thought nothing of it, but she said she couldn’t do it herself and couldn’t get anyone up there to do it. Everyone is so busy and she was glad to pay for it. Today I got a Navy Check for $68. There was a card inclosed saying, the enclosed check is in full payment of your “initial family allowance” paid in accordance with the terms of the servicemen’s dependents allowance Act of 1942 as amended, a lot more on the card, that it is in no way related to the monthly allowance for which application has been recieved. I hadn’t sent in my papers, so maybe like you said, I won’t have to. I hate to go and get this check cashed somehow. I won’t for a while. I never got any money like that before and I can’t get used to it. If you need any of it let me know.

Junior thinks he would like to come down on that pass they sent me. I wonder how many of us could come. You know old bump of curiosity, wants to see the place.

I guess you will be surprised to hear that Raynard Carter dropped dead on the street at Cuba City. Sat. night, he was talking to his Father, I suppose he has had a pretty strenous Spring with his hand burning. And his Mother died the same way when Hodays lived out there by them. She was sitting down mending. Ruby said there was another man died up to Benton the same way, a young man, visiting here but I don’t know his name. Those things like everything else, run in groups, it will be a wonder if some of the farmers don’t drop.

The milkman said he expects to go about the 1st, he said Tony tried to get him deferred and couldn’t and so far he can’t get another man. Alta said Harvard was deferred until Sept.

Tues. morning and terribly hot we are going to town first thing with flowers and get some things for dinner and come right home again. I said Bob’s and Willie were through planting corn Sat. night but I was mistaken. They are still at it, no holiday today.

When you get to eating eggs, all mushy and I will know you are really hungry enough to eat anything. I guess there you get what you need rather than what you like, well I must go now.

Love
Mom

Don’t you get all my letters, you said you wrote me off everyday from Beryle. I have written everyday except Sunday.
