Dear Ma,
Well it won’t be long before the New Year is here. I am spending it a lot different this year than I did last. Seems like quite a few fellows here are.
I didn’t write yesterday for news was scarce and it really is hard to write when I don’t hear. I got a letter from you, Willard Bennett and a kid that I went through boot camp with. Also a Christmas Card from Mr & Mrs Charles Monroe. This kid that I was in boot camp with got on an aircraft carrier. He said that all the kids did. Wish now that I had of gotten to go with them for that is what I wanted to get on. His ship was here a few days ago, but I don’t know whether it is yet or not. Figure on finding out in the morning.
Willard is in the Netherlands East Indies now. He said he went by plane and likes it fine. Paul is in the Philippines now. His outfit was in the invasion. He heard from George McRae quite often and he is in the hospital. Has been there four months with his nerves. Also that Norm is in combat in France so we might hear most anything.
So Arthur is getting married too. Guess that I am going to be the last one after all. Am anxious to hear what of a woman he gets.
Sure is nice that Stanley Shunk got home an especially at Christmas time. Guess that Sally would really be surprised when you said I didn’t write home for money. Might be different in the states but here there isn’t such a person has to spend money for. Free shows, transportation and plenty of eats. I also sent Beryle twenty five dollars for Christmas too. It is pretty hard to buy things here and get them sent so I just sent her some money.
Moores gave Jack a nice Christmas present didn’t they. Did Junior get anything this year? Am glad you got over to May’s for I know you were anxious to. I hadn’t heard anything about Earl having a wreck with Gasoline truck.
Seems like every letter I get now somebody from around home has been killed, wounded or is missing. Thought maybe Ambrose W. White Church might be coming home for he has been down under quite awhile. Was too bad about Jack McQuiety too.
Sure is nice that Bob thinks so much of Donnie. Jim is quite a bit changed now for I remember when he didn’t like to sleigh ride. Also too bad you couldn’t get your duck for Christmas. We had turkey but it wasn’t near as good as what we had Thanksgiving. We are also having it again tomorrow. Will get one of the menus and send it to you.
I knew that Beryle intended to get you something for Christmas but didn’t know what. So Uncle Jack thinks she is a nice girl. He isn’t the only one for I certainly do. Sure wish I was in the states so we could be together.
Met a Marine last evening and I don’t think I have met a nicer fellow since I have been in the service. He had been on Saipan and has one more invasion and then he gets to go back to the states. Has been wounded three times already! Invited him to come over for a meal some day and hope that he comes. He was from Texas.
So Seak is about as broad as she is high. If I keep putting on weigh I will be the same for I weigh two hundred and ten now. Well ma I don’t know any more news so I will close for now.
Love
Howard
Happy New Year
