Dear Ma,

I didn’t get to write last night so will write a few lines this morning. We had to work late again last night. One of the short workers went to hospital so it made more work for the rest of us. He had an operation when he was in the states a now it is bothering him again. I think it is internal hemroids.

I didn’t get any letter from you yesterday but got one from Beryle and the Minister at New Diggings. I think it is a kind of a letter he sends to all the boys in service.

I am a year older today but don’t feel it.

We are having quite a bit of what you had last month. I really enjoy it for it seems more like home then.

There is one fellow here that lives forty miles the other side of Dubuque an we have a lot in common. I remember seeing his name in the paper before, because he was quite a baseball and basketball player.

I have a new name now since I came here. Everybody call me Big Jim. Don’t know just how it got started, but everybody calls me it now. Well ma I don’t know any news so I will close for today.

Love
Howard
