July 17, 1944
Dear Ma,
Got two letters today an I was sure glad to get them. A person gets to wondering what might of taken place while he is gone, but as soon as one fellow gets a letter he lets everybody else know about everything. I really expected the big news by now. Sure hope she gets along alright.
I sent Beryle a telegram with my address for I knew you would both be anxious to know where we ended up at. Would of sent it to you, but I thought you would have a heart attack if you saw a telegram coming to you. It cost a dollar and thirty five cents to send it in the daytime an at night it is quite a bit less. Most of the fellows did it so I thought I might as well too.
Sure felt sorry for Francis Pairey that night when we went back, but he is a good sport about everything. Sure hope us local fellows can stick together. For awhile now. Went down an saw my old company pull out today. Hated to see Miller go. Had a lot of good friends in there. Still have Bill Nelson though. As a matter of fact we are both on the same detail a now we are suppose to be working in the mess hall but instead we are writing letters. They never give us anything to do an we never go looking for work so we are a good pair.
You sure must be busy canning all that stuff. Had better get a lot of stuff canned for I don’t think my future wife is much of a cook. After the food we had at Great Lakes I think I could live on most anything though. The food here is real good an I really enjoy my meals. The coffee is good an strong so it would be a good place for you. We have had corn on the cob, radish, mush melons , jelly, jams, ice cream and a lot of other stuff. Have a real good variety. Plenty of butter too.
We have mail call three times a day so there is a chance I might get some more letters today.
Sure wish old Clinch would get inducted. They would really take care of him an I don’t mean maybe.
Since I started this letter I have went to night mail call an got two more letters. I sure did better, an now I will got five letters today so he outdid me by one.
Well ma I guess I will close for tonight an get cleaned up.
