UNITED STATES NAVAL TRAINING STATION
GREAT LAKES, ILLINOIS

Dear Ma,
We just had mail call and I got a letter from you and Beryle. I got one from Beryle at noon too. Yesterday I went to the swimming pool in the afternoon for an hour and again last night for three hours so I didn’t have time to write to you. All non-swimmers have to learn on their own time so that takes up a lot of our spare time. Tonight the whole Company
has to go out for an hour of manual of arms. I don’t know what the reason for that is, but I don’t care much for the idea. I got a letter and a Card from Betty Ann yesterday.

We took out our life insurance policies this morning. Most of them took out 10,000 so I did too. It cost me $6.70 per month. Don’t make a whole lot of difference how much it cost for we don’t get much chance to spend it here.

That was too bad about Mr Carter dying. It seems funny for over at Beryle that Sunday I was there Oliver Gray and I was talking and he said it would be lucky if he didn’t drop dead before they got that barn built. Its funny how those things work out.

Boy it sure is hot here today. It acts like rain, but it just don’t rain. Word just came in that it is sprinkling out now.

About that Check wait a few days and see what takes place, but if you need it get it cashed.
Thats the same as what you are suppose to get every month.

The way I understand that pass is that as many as wants can come. I will ask the C.O. about it and let you know later.

I don’t get your letters like I do Beryle’s because hers all come in the night mail, whereI might get two from you one day and none the next. It’s just the way they are mailed. Your letters are swell, but you are not suppose to get compliments like the younger people. Keep them coming for I am glad to get them. Tell that lug of a brother of mine is to write. I have written two letters and a Card to him and received but one letter.

About those pictures I thought they were pretty good. They were real clear don’t you think.

It sure was swell that Norm got home again. I sure wish that I could have seen him. It was nice that they had him to unveil the honor roll. Elinor sent Wendell a letter that George McRae had written him. It contained some Jap money that he said had been in action.

Beryle said in her letter tonight that she had heard from Willard and he said that he knew where Buck was now and that he was in a fighting area.

They are pretty late getting the corn in this spring. Most years we were cultivating by this time.

If you lived in Benton you could do a good business shortening dresses for they really charge for that.

Its time to fall out me so I will
close for today.

Love
Howard
