Dear Howard,

I received your letter the other day. But they keep us busy here, so I didn’t have time to answer it. But it’s Sunday here, and have the day off, so will try and answer it.

Last Sunday I was on hard duty and worked twelve hours. That sure seems like a long time. But it isn’t hard work, but very tiresome.

Cherry is still sleeping. He didn’t even get up for breakfast. He sure is gaining weight. I think I have gained some. Me and him have a double bunk room. He sleeps up and me down. That makes it pretty nice.

It sure seems funny to be where it’s nice and warm in the month of January. That’s one thing I was wishing for. But for the summer I over still wish I was where it was a little cooler. But I don’t expect to stay here long. But you never know when you’re in the service when you’re in the Army.

The weather here is nice here now. Morning and nights are cool. It really hasn’t rained since we have been here. But gets foggy and mist a little.

Well how’s every thing in Leadmine? I sure would like to hang my chin on seven bar. It was a good life as long as it lasted.

We have a good time when we go to town here. But it really cost the dough. I spent 50 bucks since I’ve been here. And have a good 75¢ left. But get pay tomorrow. That calls for at least one good night. I guess a fellow shouldn’t complain about a soldier life. Because we have a lot of good times, and a lot of damn poor times. But after all we’re here to battle a war. And the fun ought to be forgotten. But they have all kinds of entertainment for us. Good eats and we kept in perfect health. And have one more appointment with the dentist. And then will have a perfect set of teeth. The most thing a soldier does, is taken care of his self.

I see in the Benton Paper when Happy Hopper is in Alamo Field San Antonio. Alamo is just outside our post. So I am going to drop him a line. And see where he is there. If it’s close we and Cherry will drop down there some Sunday and see him.

Well that sure was some accident at the mine. Cherry really felt bad about that. He set in front of the telephone for about eight hours waiting for the return call. But it seems like these things have to happen.

I got a letter from Beulah Farrey yesterday. Another one of them told of old times. There sure is some nice women down here, and I can do a little business with them.

Me and another fellow just took time out and I had a couple of bottles of beer. One thing I didn’t do around here.

Well Howard I think I have spread enough bull shit for one letter. So will sign off for now. Hoping to hear from you again soon.

Your pal
Willy

P.S. With best of luck W.H.B.
