Dear Howard,

Sorry I have been so long writing to you but I have been very busy lately. I am working as C. Q. for my first sgt. It is very interesting work but keeps one busy most of the time and every day of the week so I don’t have much time to write letters. I manage to write to Marge and my mother every day but it seems that I can’t keep caught up on my other correspondence.

I had a letter from Kay Byrnes them other day. She said she had been down to Leadmine the night and day before. I guess she saw you from the way she talked. I don’t hear very much from New Diggings so I guess it is because I owe everybody in town a letter.

Willard, Tommy and I are about the only ones left here out of the bunch that came in here when we did. I guess Ernie is still here too. Boy, he really hates the army life. I don’t like being here but I like the army life O.K.

I am working in the office now so don’t have to go out and drill or don’t have to do any detail work or K.P. I have never been on K.P. yet. Willard was on yesterday.

I hope to get shipped out of here this week or next week and I am sure praying that I get shipped closer to someone I know and can go see or else they can come and see me. I bet I don’t have any such luck though.

We got 200 km new men in the night before last and were up all night getting them settled and getting their records typed and filed. I got to loaf around the next day.

Tommy and I went to the show last night. It was a darn good one too. “Random Harvest” with Greer Garson and Ronald Colman. If you haven’t seen it and it is around be sure and go to it. It is a wonderful show.

Mother likes it fine in California. I’m sure glad she had such a nice place to go. It makes things a lot easier for me to know that she is well-taken care of and is in such a nice warm climate.

Tell your mother to write her and tell her the news if she has time. I know mother will enjoy getting it as she says news from home is very welcome.

How are you and the girl friend getting along. I don’t hear very much about it. How is the bowling coming. I haven’t been bowling since I got in the army. I hope to go some of these days.

Well, I must stop and go to work so will close for now. My regards to everyone and if you see anyone that I owe a letter to tell them for me that maybe after I get out of here I will have a little more time to answer their letters. I work from 6-6 every day so you can see that doesn’t leave me much time for myself by the time I do my washing, keep my shoes polished, keep my room cleaned up and all the innumerable other things that one must do to keep up a good record in the army. It is now 8:30 A.M. and the boss is due back from checking out the men for morning drill so I will stop and get to work.
