Somewhere in Italy
February 7, 1944
Monday Evening

Dear Eula, Howard + Rena May,

I just arrived home from my day-off, so thought I would write a few lines to you. Everything is about the same around here and going along okay. I am still feeling fine, so I can’t complain. It’s been very chilly the past few days and froze quite hard last night, but the weather has been swell the past four weeks until several days ago. I suppose you’ve had your share of cold weather and snow by now, so that you are beginning to look forward to spring. Have you had much rain this winter?

I went downtown this morning and spent several hours at the Red Cross Club before going to the show which was titled “An Old Oklahoma” starring John Wayne and Martha Scott. It was fairly good and very exciting in certain parts. After the show, I went back to the Red Cross Club and had some coffee and rolls in the Snack Bar, where I also met an old buddy of mine from N. Africa. Had a long visit, and then we went upstairs and listened to a good army band play for awhile. By then, it was time to leave for the field, so I arrived back there just in time for supper which was fairly good, since we had roast beef, carrots + crushed pineapple as the main items. It’s very interesting to see how all of these people live over here and go about doing their work. Most of the people live in apartments and separate homes

Swell of you to remember me, and I really appreciated receiving the many nice gifts. It’s sure good to know that people still remember a fellow even though he’s been gone the past year. Thanks again, and I hope all of you celebrated a very happy holiday season. We fared quite well over here. Glad to hear that Howard likes to trap. I’ll bet he’s sold plenty of hides so far this season.

I like my work fine and so far, I like Italy much better than N. Africa. Everything is more modern and resembles the states more than any other country I’ve visited since I’ve been over here.

They have ice cream in the Red Cross Club several times a week and so far, I’ve managed to be there twice when it was served. It’s really good too. Just like back home.

We visited many cities on the way up here and saw many interesting sights from the air. In southern Italy, they all have large homes with several round domes on the top of each house. Also, along the roads on each side, there’s usually a high rock wall which looks very odd from a plane. We made part of the trip flying quite high and it was very pretty to see the sun shining down on the white clouds which looked just like snow.

I’ve gained back all of my lost weight, and now weigh around 144# which is very good for me.

Here’s hoping this finds all of you in the best of health and to take care of yourselves. Say hello to Fluffy and all of the fellows for me. Howard. Until next time.

Sincerely
Stan

Adios
