August 18, 1944

Dear Ma,
Have been here two days now and I got a letter from home this afternoon so I feel pretty good. The letter I got was written the sixth of August. They sure did get my mail transferred in a hurry. Maybe I will get some more tonight.

As usual I got put on a working detail the first day. Francis, Harold, Harry and I have been pulling nails out of boards. Just something to be putting our time in. This camp here isn’t near as nice as the one at Shoemaker. The eats aren’t as good and it is awful sandy. Puts me in mind of the dirt around the prospects at home. One thing we do have here and that is the flowers. They are all over and they are really pretty. That’s the only good thing I can say about it though.

I guess by now you haven’t Bob with you anymore. I imagine that you miss him. How did Jim make out? Rena May will have something to play with now that Brownie has her calf. I can picture Willie telling you that it was several days old. You were pretty lucky to get it home so easy. It’s nice that Uncle John is getting along alright. Can’t never tell when he might pass on though. I told Junior to fix those brakes but he has been pretty busy. I could fix them myself but if I had the ease was home. Bob must be quite affectionate. Jenella sure will have her hands full. Well ma I will close for now and go take a shower.

Love Howard
