Pearl Harbor
Dec. 2

Dear Ma,

Don’t know much news tonight, but had better write you a few lines for I didn’t write last night. Didn’t get any letter from you yesterday or today, but had one from Beryle & Ernest. They have some of the streets decorated for Christmas in town and it really looks more like the real thing this year. Feel more like going now than I used to for the time seems to drag now.

One of the fellows that I used to work for me got badly hurt yesterday. He was in the sleeping area on his way and there were several of them that had been drinking and I guess gotten quite drunk. Anyway there is a stairs going down the side of a ‘hill’, something like at Galena and he fell down these. He hurt his spine somehow and is paralyzed from his head down. They say that all he can move is his head. Certainly to bad for he wanted to be home for Christmas the worst way. He is a man thirty five years old. It is possible that it might turn out to be fatal. Feel bad about it for even though he was a heavy drinker he was a wonderful worker. He thought a lot of me and would do anything I asked of him.

Ernest said in his letter that he had all his top teeth out already. Seems as if they think that is what is causing all his trouble. Guess he will be coming home with false teeth. Don’t look like he will be like his Uncle Benny have one tooth left in front.

You should see the black cat we have here. In the office where I work there are two desks and today I was writing a letter and I looked up and there he was sleeping away in the middle of the desk. It is a tom cat, but the best mouser that I ever saw. He gets lots to eat and sleeps inside all the time so I imagine he belongs to the regular Navy. Somebody stole our pet dog so we only have one pet now.

Second of December already. Time seems to have passed pretty fast when I look back. Eight more days and I will have been overseas sixteen months. There really isn’t anything much to write about so I will close now and take a shower.

Love
Howard
