U. S. NAVAL RECEIVING BARRACKS SHOEMAKER, CALIFORNIA
July 13, 1944
Dear Ma,
Have been busy all day today so I won’t be able to make this letter to long. They came around an put us on a work detail today so we will be pretty busy for awhile. I am working in the chow house so I get plenty to eat. Helped them unload vegetables, meat and fruit this morning. There was a lot of heavy lifting to that but it is clean work. This afternoon I had to take care of the garbage an that is a soft job. I am suppose to have a different job every day. after three days we get a twenty four hour liberty every other day. A lot of fellows go out an get work. but I don’t think I will. Miller and Nelson are on the same work detail an they had to peel onions today. Im glad I didn’t get that job.
I don’t know any news to write so it is kind of hard to write. Figured on writing several letters today, but I got slipped up on it. you should see the prisoners that they have here. They are our own men who have deserted or did something wrong. They sure do keep them guarded.
Well ma I am real tired and I don’t feel so much like writing tonight so I will close for now.
Love
Howard
