U. S. NAVAL RECEIVING BARRACKS SHOEMAKER, CALIFORNIA

July 15, 1944

Dear Ma,
Sure have had a soft day today. Didn’t have to work this morning and went to work this afternoon at three o’clock and sat down until six o’clock. Then came back to the barracks. This is really a fine life in here awhile.

You needn’t send me any money for we got a big surprise today and got paid. I got thirty dollars. I don’t believe that anybody got the same. I will get more next time for I didn’t get all I should of today. Some fellows will have it all gambled away by bedtime. One fellow won eighty dollars. That’s one thing I won’t do for I hate to part with my money that way.

Had the most fun last night I have had since I been in the Navy. Squirt Parrey and I went and played pool and we had a swell time. This a swell camp for a person can do anything he wants.

A lot of fellows went out on liberty and got drunk. Don’t think I will take much for I wouldn’t want to go with anybody that drunk. Would like to go out and see some of the country around here.

Should be getting some mail about Monday. Be sure and put my middle initial on my letters for there is another fellow here with the same name as mine. His middle initial is J though. Believe I will close for tonight for there is a terrible lot of noise here.

Love,
Howard
