Dear Ma,

Got a letter from you this noon a things hadn’t turned out as I expected. Guess it got mixed up in the post office. I am writing this letter down in the mess hall. If I keep this job very long I will be getting fat. All I do is eat and sleep. Have a notion to go out tomorrow and work.

You sure must have a wonderful crop of raspberries this year. Sure wish I had some of them to eat. The war news sure does look better now. Old Hitler come pretty close to meeting his Waterloo. If the people in Germany will only revolt now it would soon be the end of the war there. The chances of us fellows getting in on the fighting now are very slim. They got all the men ready now and our replacements. I don’t have any idea how long we will be here. Sorry I had to change from pen to pencil but I ran out of ink.

Forgot to tell you I got my hair cut the other day. Only cost fifteen cents. Pretty fair job. Guess you will miss your milk checks coming in. Did you ever get those other papers filled out? Am back up to the barracks now and read a list of names in the paper tonight and the only one close to home that doesn’t on the list was a fellow from Portage. It sure was a terrible thing.

It sure is getting cold out here tonight. Coldest it has been since we came. I guess Dillys dollar would go in the blue mold pile. Did you ever get that money from Harry? Ought to have quite a little bit coming. Didn’t get any letters tonight so I should get several tomorrow. Wendell got a letter from Nancy yesterday and he said that he a pretty close call. He was in France about ten miles.

Well ma I guess I will close for tonight for I don’t know any news.

Love
Howard

I got the two dollars all right.
