Dear Ma,

Had better write tonight for I have missed two nights writing now. Wednesday evening Ernest was here so I didn’t get a chance to write and last night it was bedtime when I got back off of liberty. I went down to where Ernest is stationed and had supper down there. I always heard about the army having stew and sure enough they had it, but it was real good. I have had two letters from you since I last wrote so I should be able to write quite a bit tonight.

It sounds good to hear that it has finally warmed up, but I guess that July and August will be terrible hot.

Harry Magee really must be under an awful strain with Ethel being in such a bad condition all the time. I think it is best to let Harold know how she is too. He really knows that she hadn’t been very well for quite a few years though. If I remember correctly I think you will find that Harold is in a non-combat unit.

I didn’t know that none of our relations didn’t trade at White Church anymore. Where do they do all their shopping at now?

It really would be something to see so many service women in town. What I would like to see for a change is some good old civilians, for it gets tiresome looking at people in uniform all the time.

Spuds really must be getting scarce when they take your name when you buy them. That’s something I have cooked a lot of since I have been in the Navy, but now it is soup, vegetables and making gravy.

The letter that Paul wrote to his mother must of been something like the one I got from him. He really sounded quite blue in mine too.

I hope that my girl hasn’t gone like Eldon Herbst did by the time I come home. A person can’t really blame a girl though when they are young. I really think Beryle will want and hope she does. Know for sure that I will for there isn’t much choice on my part.

That Henningsen and Herbst both deserved a discharge for they both had a lot of time overseas and a lot of action so I guess they were thinking that it was time for a few from around home getting out now. I am sorry to hear that Helen got such a lemon for a husband. She always was a good girl and deserved something better than that. I knew she wasn’t too much good though before she married him.

I was going to buy some paper like Ernest writes on, but just didn’t. I wouldn’t want to send home a bunch of trash like some of the guys do and have people see that and get the wrong impression of this place. I wish that people could get the true picture of things here instead of that movie idea of the place.

One of these days when I go to town I am going to buy some things for all of you and send home. Didn’t use to have much money to spare, but do pretty good now.

Yesterday was Bobbie’s birthday and it was a year ago that I came home on leave. Won’t be long before it will be a year since I have been home. I sure would like to see the kids for I bet they are cute as can be. Jimmy has probably forgotten all about me by now.

I got a snap shot here that a fellow took the other day so I will send it. Had my pant legs rolled up so you can see my big foot pretty plain. Also notice my large stomach. Weight about two fourteen now.

Beryle is suppose to get home from California the sixth. Really are making a flying trip.

Well ma I don’t know a whole lot so I will close.

Love
Howard
