Dear Howard,
Well we got home about 11:30 Sat night and we were a very tired bunch. I don’t believe I was ever quite as tired before in my life. If it had been cool, it wouldn’t have been as bad. But that heat was sure terrible. This morning was the hottest morning we have had here. It took me some time to come to life this morning, but it is cooling off tonight and threatening to storm again. We came home through Rockford and Freeport. Freeport had a fine road but it seemed so awfully long. I wonder which is the best route to go? Rena May & Benge slept some. I think they slept from Freeport on or they were awfully quiet. But I watched the road just as close as if I were driving like Jaluga do. I was afraid Junior might play out.
We went 60 miles and then sometimes more for miles and miles, that little car sure eats up the road and it is surprising how little gas it takes. I was glad when we got out of Rockford. I never saw such driving in my life. It looks like it is everybody for himself and the Devil take the hindmost. We come through there alright but our brother seems to be equal to anything on the road and we sure would have had a hard time getting there. If we hadn’t have had a mechanic for a driver, when the car got hot and if he hadn’t known something about electricity we would have been stalled. We went to put those wires down on the road. He is sure a handy fellow with everything but a razor. We had our supper at Libertyville and looked around there a while, it was hard coming home against that glaring sun. It was a relief when it got dark. We took Benge
Home and then Junior went to New Diggings. He stayed down there all night, they were all in bed asleep but Bob woke up. If he had known, they were alright, he could have gone to bed here and not disturbed them. They came up here and had dinner and went home about 4. Jonella was getting pretty tired. She said their house is so much cooler than either of us down here. Haven’t seen anyone else today or heard any more news.
Frances Thompson was here yesterday and so was Rita Tulley, she left your policy all made out to you. She said for me to have it changed over to you. It really should have been done I guess. I have a date at Bales to pick strawberries tomorrow. I hope to goodness it is cool and doesn’t rain but that is almost too much to hope for. I saw a fellow down there that it was nearly new and I guess it cost them a lot of money. It’s a wonder they didn’t all get on fire those hot days.
Just made me think of Homer Richards. He was just his size, looked a lot like him and talked just like him. When I was sitting in that waiting room, or whatever you call it, he and his wife were talking to another fellow and his wife, and as I watched him and listened to him talk and laugh, I thought, here is Homer’s double. I liked to sit there and watch people, but I didn’t see anyone else that reminded me of anyone I knew. I sure would have liked to have gotten closer to that lake and I would like to see the swimming pool. This is Monday morning and I never get my wish. I woke up at 5 o’clock nearly frozen stiff. I got up and made some coffee to warm me up. I will have to wear a coat to pick berries. We sure are having some freshish weather but it didn’t rain thank goodness. Well I must close and get going. The big K&M truck burned up, a big loss for them.
