Dear Howard
Your good letter was none the less appreciated, even though the reply has been rather delayed. We were so glad to have you write us such an interesting letter about life at the training station, which surely is some contrast to the farm routine: especially doing your own laundry on Saturday evening of all times. Fine though to have clean white uniforms for Sunday, especially when it has been so warm as this last week.
Today however is a radical change. Had to wear a sweater when I went out to do the morning’s work. Hope this will clear the weather as we do need some fine days to work the corn and for those who have hay down.
Will is cultivating for the third time the corn field west of the house, but the other two he has only been through once with Buddy’s help. They could soon be taken care of, however, if it would stop raining for a few days.
Can imagine how happy you would be Saturday to have your family come to visit you. It was so stormy looking after they left as we wondered what they might drive in to, but it seems they escaped the worst storm. Fortunately, you no doubt are looking forward to your furlough at home, and we shall all be so glad to see you. How lucky you’ll be here in time to celebrate the Fourth. Haven’t heard of any plans here, so no doubt will be something doing somewhere. Too many young people are away to carry out the elaborate celebrations of pre-war days. The real real joyous get-to-gather will have to wait till the war is over.
Can imagine how good your mother’s cooking will taste to you, for she takes second place to no one in that particular accomplishment.
Anna says she has heard the chaplain from Great Lakes and thinks he is wonderful. It must give you a real thrill to attend a service of such proportions. Listened to the Great Lakes choir yesterday afternoon.
Had a letter from Marion Garhart. He certainly is being missed in the community. Of course people were sort of jealous for it because of his long vacations, but it will be difficult to fill his place if it ever is filled. He surely had used his strength and ability for public service.
Understand Leonard Andrews is getting along as well as they could expect, but he probably will be a hospital patient for a long time.
It’s 10:45 and Will has just finished the west field. It’s sprinkling rain so may not be fine very long.
Looking forward to seeing you soon.
Yours sincerely
Leonard Will Booty
