Dear Howard,
It is lovely and cool here and I am taking advantage of it and getting my garden cleaned up, but while I am doing that the yard is getting the best of me. I was up to Ed Dombies after those chairs yesterday and he has an electric motor on his lawn mower, is that ever the berries. He didn’t have the high chair fixed yet, he is awfully busy. The bluejays are helping me with the cherries. They are just living on them, sure wish you were here to take a few shots at them and then Brownie eats them too, she has found out that they are good and is eating off all that she can reach. her an the pet hen have a fight everyday. She sticks her nose into the little chickens feed and then the pet hen flies right at her.
It is really funny. I had that Insurance Changed into your name, she asked me why she never got that bill and I said Junior didn’t know just how to go about it, because of the way the Insurance was and she said wait awhile now until it is all fixed up and then send her the bill, in your name, and date it accordingly and we will get the money alright. She said Bush has Changed so much seems so much older. They are tailing our road but the tailings are so fine, the trucks will sure kick up a dust now if it gets dry. Bush said Bennie rolls that old truck right along and gets just as many loads as the young fellows but is not very particular how he dumps them. some of the fellows were kicking about it and asked him who dumped that way, and Bush said he never noticed who it was, but he said, whoever he was I guess it was someone who has to make his bread & butter the same as us, he wouldn’t tell on him.
I expect Ernest to drop in today, I haven’t seen him since Friday. I guess after Bush went he didn’t need the car. If I ever come to Great Lakes again and back the same day, I am going to Dubuque and get a plane. Coming home I wished more than once, that the car could just take off on top of a hill and just fly across Country, I thought every mile from Freeport home, that I couldn’t survive another mile but I didn’t say much. I got so numb and weak. I thought sure we would see Wendell and Frances, if we had only known there would only be 4 of us, we could have brought Elinor but of course we would have to have known in time for her to get a pass.
Junior said when we were leaving if Elinor was at New Diggings, we could go and get her, but I guess if she had of come she wouldn’t have seen him then, without a pass. We will be going to town tonight, and make a try again for $50. I guess we will have our usual luck. I cashed that check bought a $50 war bond, paid Rita the insurance and still have $6.10 left, it was pretty handy. I will have to get back to work. the work is getting into the East again, I know what that means I haven’t gotten over to see Beryle since our trip but I guess she must have survived it. Junior said he could have gone again the next day.
