Dear Rena May,
It is twenty minutes to five and I have until five o’clock to write this letter. I imagine that you will be helping ma get the Cows about now. How is your garden coming?
Well the best thing happened today that has happened since I left! I got four letters. Yours, ma, and Beryles two. Wendell got one and he is the only local fellow that got any. The fellow in the next bunk From me had tears in his eyes tonight after mail call. I sure was tickled to get mine. It sure was too bad about Dr. Ennes dying. I had a feeling somebody like that had died.
You needn’t think that it wasn’t cold here. We haven’t saw the sun but once since we were here. It rained a lot yesterday, but we were lucky and didn’t have to go out in.
Did Jimmy and Bob get down yesterday?
I wrote a letter to them yesterday afternoon.
We are so busy that we don’t have time
to do much writing. There is so much racket all the time that I don’t concentrate like I should.
A fellow just came back from the
Canteen and you should see the rush
for candy. I got a Candy bar out
of it.
Please don’t send me anything at all for we don’t have any room for anything. They sure do make things unhandy.
Beryle said in her letter that she was talking to you and ma. We wrote our lists today to see
whether we go to school or to sea after we finish boot. They weren’t so bad, but I doubt whether there is to much chance of going to school.
The eats have been real good, an we haven’t had many beans at all. Francis Purrey is sitting here by me writing letters. I will close for now for I want to write to Beryle tonight.
Love from your Brother
Howard
