Shullsburg Wis.
May 21, 1944.
8 o’clock Sunday evening, Junior, Genalda, Bob & Jim just left. I still have room to walk, but that is all, on the floor there is everything from the tea strainer to talcum powder, sounds natural doesn’t it? they came down about three o’clock just as I was going up to Ennis. So they went on down to New Diggings and came back for supper. It has been a real wet day, one show after another all day, the ground is surely soaked, there won’t be anything done in the field for a day or two.
Dr. Ennis looked pretty good, a peculiar grey color though. it looks such a pity to see those useful hands folded. I surely feel sorry for Mrs. Ennis. She hasn’t anyone left now except one of Jimmie’s boys and he is out of this Country some place. I guess she has more money than she knows what to do with but I wouldn’t trade places with her for twice as much. Just as we were going to eat supper.
Dr. Ennis’s body was brought in about seven or eight priests came out, he is going to be buried from the Catholic Church in the morning but in our cemetery. Of course the ground will have to be blessed, he wanted to be buried beside his wife. I’m glad they didn’t take him to Milwaukee, it seems as though he belongs to us and I guess he felt that way too, when he came here he was 24 years old, just about your age now he was truly a boy. Dr. I’ve told you how the old Dr’s scorned him. but he just ignored it a worked hard and surely succeeded. I saw Bergle last night when I went over to mail my letter and met Kay Byrne. who I have heard you talk about got some gas at Mrs. Fowler’s. she said she missed you and Dale terribly and that Joie cried when she told him you were gone she gives you a wonderful reputation.
Rob is still in the Hospital so they couldn’t have the celebration. I sent them a nice card. I was talking to Eva & Wesley. they said Doris Richards was operated on for Appendicitis, I think there must be an Epidemic of it.
Paul Poppa has left the States haven’t
seen Arthur. though he said he would
surely come to see me again. he will have to come tomorrow, I guess his time is pretty well taken up. When I get your correct address I will give it to Mr. Vail so you will get that wonderful paper. It has been to wet to go picking morels or fishing and besides we have been so busy we haven’t had time.
I didn’t get the tire thing yet but I got the B. book, also an invitation from Great Lakes with a permit to come and visit you in 4 weeks but it won’t be worth while if you are coming home in 3 weeks I guess I won’t drive down, tell me a little more about your camp an trip. I could write a story a mile long if I had a trip like that. sure is nice to have some boys from home with you, if you need any protection, Wendell will be your right hand man. well I don’t know any more news so will close so I can get up in the Morning
Love, Mom.
