AMERICAN RED CROSS
Fort Lewis, Washington
May 22, 1943

Dear Howie,

How’s tricks, pal? OK I hope. Guess I am still here in Fort Lewis. If I stay with these hill billies, I’ll be here for the duration I guess. I’ve been trying to get transferred, but it is hard to do, especially out of the Infantry.

Well I suppose you are kept pretty busy now. Has the weather warmed up yet? Everyone that writes says that it hasn’t warmed up much. It is not so good for the crops, eh?

I have been in the hospital here a couple of weeks now. In fact it was two weeks Thursday. I got athletes foot in my left foot and infection set in. They had to cut all that infected part off and then I had my foot in hot packs and soaked in boric acid. I was right in bed for a week. All my meals were brought in to me and I eat right in bed. My foot is getting along fine now though and I hope to be out of this hospital soon.

I don’t know when I will be getting a furlough now. I was to come the 18th, but I was in the hospital. I won’t know when I can come now until I get back to my company. I hear Mary was getting home on a furlough soon and that George McCrea was coming the 20th of this month. Lucky guys those fellows that went to New Jersey really got a break. The Air Corps is the best branch of the service there is.

Willard really has it in Ohio. He was going into Chicago on a pass last weekend. He is only three hundred miles from there. I hear from him often and also Millie and Buck. Millie is still in Fort San Houston, Texas. I don’t know whether Chery is still there or not yet. I guess you know Buck is down in Camp Roberts, California. That is about twelve hundred miles from here. Tommy Vaughn is back in the North Port here where I am stationed at. I am going to look him up when I get back over there. Someone said Lefty Roberts is out here in Washington in some shipyard but I don’t know where.

Well, Harrie, I will close for now, as news are scarce.

“To furnish voluntary aid to the sick and wounded of armies…..” and “To act in matters of voluntary relief and in accord

Have you heard from Pat Henry since you wrote? I haven’t heard from him in a heck of a while now. I don’t hear from Maury much either.

I guess you still go to Ladina. Say do you hear from Dottie yet? Where is she at and what is her address. I have mislayed her last letter or lost it. Hoping to see you soon and write when you find time. I’ll try to answer yours next time.

Your Loving Pal,
Norm

P.S. Does old “Fluff” still dodging the draft? He must know somebody, eh?
