Dear Ma,

Just finished eating supper and thought it would be a good time to answer your letters. I got two from you today so I don’t expect one from you tomorrow. And one from Billy. I was feeling alright. One of your letters came in three days so I don’t expect one from you tomorrow.

Sure must be a great time for the hired men with all that rain. Guess by now you and Dilly have all the milk weeds picked. They say that life jackets are made out of them. Have a funny smell.

Suters sure are going to have plenty of boys. Sure would be a surprise if Shirley had five this time. I don’t know just what I will do after the war, but think I will come home with you and Dilly and White.

If I was younger and didn’t have other things on my mind I would like to stay in. One thing I am not a bit sorry for joining up like I did though. It really is a wonderful experience for anybody. I got a standing offer of a job in a Walgreen Drug Store if I ever want it. The fellow I work with gave me that for he has worked for them all his life. Wouldn’t mind farming if I was my own boss.

I really think that the war will be over before to long. Wouldn’t be surprised if it all ended at once. I think it will be a pretty hard job to keep some of these fellows that have been overseas so long from celebrating.

I know Wendell used to get pretty home sick when he was with us fellows and I guess it worse on him now. The only time I really was homesick was the first Sunday night in boot camp.

I guess you will be surprised when I tell you that I missed Rena May more than anybody. I have missed you all a lot but I guess it was our little fights that made me miss her most. I wouldn’t mind having some candy if you could send it and I think you can. I think you can send packages to fellows in the Navy anytime. Couldn’t be any staler than the candy we get here anyway. You sure have been doing alright in the sugar line, seems funny to think things are rationed the way we use them.

I guess things are pretty rough around home now with the big settlement under way. Mr. Curry sure has got his neck in it now. One thing he is a convincing talker if he could get Harry and Wilbur to listen. They sure are going back far enough into it.

If I remember correct it was last summer that the mining company wanted to take the lease back. The last money we got was fifty five dollars a few days before I left for the Navy. We still have the money coming for the tailings that were hauled this spring and the milling. Don’t think that is all of it but a person never knows. I just don’t know what to say about it yet, but send funds and your opinion when you have a talk. I am anxious to see the papers. I do feel sorry for Nell in a way, but then again she was as bad as any of them.

I don’t know why we didn’t go to that place I said, but I don’t expect to go any place but home from here. I will close for tonight now.

Love,
Howard
