Hawaii
Sept 27

Dear Ma,

Was too tired to write last night so I let it go until this morning. Don’t make any difference for the mail don’t it go out until noon anyway. Sure was surprised at the amount of mail I got yesterday. I got three letters from you, one from Beryle, Virginia and Mary Margaret and with 5 others it really made seven. All I expected yesterday was two from you.

Mary said that Andrew Bennett, Betty Ann and Joan were back one Sunday and that Pauline and Mrs Bennett are working at defence plant and Andy is a janitor in some building. She said she didn’t think any of them liked it too well. Paul wrote back to Albert and told him to have an extra bed ready for he was coming back to New Diggings. I know I would feel the same way myself.

I heard that Bob McCauley is going to get a discharge from the Navy because he is going deaf. Sure would be too bad for something like that to happen to one so young.

There is no danger of the population dying out at home with all the babies that have been coming. The old stork will need a rest pretty bad after this.

I heard that the girl Mickey was going to marry was fifteen and had a nine months old baby. He is getting a young wife and a family all at once.

A person would think that boy of the Drs. wasn’t quite right from his actions. Sure will be hard for him to get a start with something like that hanging over him.

You had quite a nice crowd at the Co-workers that day. I didn’t know that Danny was getting married so soon.

The R.S. in my address stands for Receiving Station.

I always thought that Arthur would get to look like his dad when he got older. His actions are a lot like his too.

Ostelle never wants to forget anybody when he writes does he? Sure hope he comes through alright.

I figured that the road down through New Diggings would be plenty rough. Guess they don’t like the trucks going through town very good.

It’s too bad Jimmy Harry’s mine burn it down. Francis will feel kind of bad about that. He told me once that the last month he worked him, Ray and his dad cleared seven hundred and fifty dollars a piece so you can see they were doing alright. Sure glad nothing happened to Stanley that day. Sure could of when he went down that old shaft.

You sure are getting brave driving over that back road to Maya in the rain.

We are suppose to get twenty five dollars a month for milling. I didn’t think that there was any clause in that lease that said they had to pay us fifty dollars a month if they didn’t work either.

The Scales Mound people will really think that you are a bunch of goddesses. It’s nice that Uncle Herb can hear so good with his ear trumpet.

Virginia said she wasn’t very anxious for her folks to move until Junior and Othello got home.

That sure was a close call for Donnie. I know that would be a terrible thing for a grown person along side of a little baby like him. It’s a good thing Junior got there when he did for he is a pretty good hand at anything like that. Sure is nice that Bobby thinks so much of him. He must be a lot different then Jim. Sure must of been quite a sight to see Junior all cleaned up.

I guess Junior has quite a bit of responsibility now that both the Engles are gone or is there smart son there. I know before everybody that came in always asked for him.

I figured that maybe both Harry and Nell would be pretty well cooled down by the time you went up there. I hope they are able to settle it out of Court for I would sooner see it done that way. No reason why it couldn’t be. Hope you went with them to Darlington, for maybe you would be able to find out some things. That is about the amount of money that he should have.

I really would hate to see Aunt Nell have to leave there even though she is disgusting sometimes. Shouldn’t it take to much money for Harry to buy the place for he owns the biggest share of it now.

Mrs. Ennis must think a lot of Thomas and Eileen when she wants them on her best place.

We sure had a good supper last night. We had beef steak and French fried potatoes and it really was good. Wish Junior could of had some of the potatoes. I am the one that cooked them so I got all the credit. Worked at them two hours and a half steady so you can see it was quite a job. Well and I guess I will close now and go do some washing and part of it to the laundry and do part of it myself. I got a big box of rinse and some bleach so it isn’t to hard a job now.

Love
Howard
