Sunday Morning
Dear Howard,
I really think you owe me a letter but I think I had better write and let you know where I am.
This is Florida – the land of sunshine, a better name for it would be the land of mosquitoes. They fairly eat you alive. I never saw anything like it. My body is one mass of mosquito bites. I was in West Palm Beach last night and got some dope for them. I hope it helps. We have to sleep in mosquito netting all the time. It is hotter than hell here but I like it O.K. except for the mosquitoes. All there is down here is sand and scrub pine. These are also quite a few Palm trees. Don’t ever let anyone sell you a vacation trip to Florida. One marvelous thing we have are wonderful beaches. The Camp has a wonderful beach of its own about a mile from where I live. I have been down there once and now I have to wait for my sunburn to get better before I go again. It is only better now. We wade off into the Atlantic and you can wade out a long way and not get your wonderful sensation of the waves breaking over your head. I like to ride them. It is the best swimming I ever had in my life.
My buddy from Oregon who was in K.C. with me is here as my bunk partner. Quite a few of us from K.C. came down there. We had a swell trip in a pullman. We had a private compartments. We are traveling that way. We came through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Miss., Alabama, Ga., and Florida. Some of the big towns we came through were – Little Rock, Memphis, Birmingham, Atlanta, and Jacksonville. We had stop-overs at most of them. We are down here to go to school some more.
Probably will be here, you know, until about Nov. We are going to Radar school. You probably have read of it. The secret weapon of the war. That is all I can say about it now for they don’t allow us to say more.
We haven’t started to school yet. We are doing detail work every day. Yesterday we were setting targets at the rifle range. I was relaying orders from the field telephone.
Write me soon and give me all the news. Tell everyone hello for me.
Your friend,
Art
